## How the YouTube Data API works now

- **Every call costs units.** Each project gets 10,000 units a day. Reading videos, channels, playlist items, or comments costs 1 unit. Listing caption tracks costs 50.
- **Search has its own limit.** Since June 1, 2026, search has its own limit: 100 calls a day by default. Every call counts, even an invalid one.
- **More quota.** Fill in YouTube’s Audit and Quota Extension Form. YouTube checks that your project follows its API terms, then decides.

For the short answer on cost, see [Is the YouTube Data API free?](/questions/is-the-youtube-data-api-free) If you already hit the limit, see [YouTube Data API quota exceeded](/questions/youtube-data-api-quota-exceeded-what-now). For units and what they buy, see [YouTube Data API pricing](/compare/youtube-data-api-pricing).

## Why people look for an alternative

- **100 searches a day.** Tracking more than a few keywords takes more than 100 searches a day. The limit resets at midnight Pacific Time.
- **Captions need edit permission.** Downloading captions needs OAuth and permission to edit the video. Without it, Google answers 403 forbidden.
- **No Shorts field.** Google returns Shorts as normal videos. No field says a video is a Short.
- **One platform.** The Data API only covers YouTube. If you also need Instagram, TikTok, X, or Reddit, you add more APIs and more parsers.

## Where the YouTube Data API may fit

- **Uploads and edits.** Upload videos, edit titles, and manage playlists. Openhandle is read-only and never writes to YouTube.
- **Your own channel.** Private videos, captions you own, and channel settings need your own login.
- **Bulk video stats.** Reading stats for many known video IDs costs 1 unit per call. That is cheap if you stay inside the quota.

You can use both. Use the Data API for your own channel and bulk stats, and Openhandle for search, transcripts, and public reads past the quota.

## What changes when you move

- **No Google Cloud project.** Create a key and call. Seconds. No approval wait.
- **No daily quota.** 10 per second per key. Higher on request. Search costs the same as any other request.
- **One price per request.** $0.0025 per request, down to $0.002 at volume. 30-day cache hits are free. The price is on the [pricing page](/pricing).
- **Transcripts of public videos.** Timed caption text in each caption language the video has. You do not need OAuth.
- **Shorts are marked.** Every video has a type: video, short, or live. Channel Shorts have their own endpoint.
- **One shape.** Channels, videos, and comments look the same as profiles, posts, and comments on Instagram, TikTok, X, and Reddit.

## Move your integration

1. **Start with a Test key.** Create a Test key in the dashboard. Use the synthetic identifiers in the [quickstart](/docs/quickstart) to check your integration without charges.
2. **Map your calls.** Match each Data API call to the [API reference](/docs/api-reference). Keep uploads and edits on the Data API. The table below lists common calls.
3. **Update paths and authentication.** Use https://api.openhandle.dev/v1 with Authorization: Bearer followed by your key. Channels take an @handle or a channel ID. Videos take the 11 character video ID.
4. **Map response fields.** Successful responses contain platform, resource, capturedAt, source, and data. Lists show the rounded counts YouTube shows and set metrics.isApproximate to true. Read one video for exact counts. See the [YouTube docs](/docs/platforms/youtube).
5. **Handle pagination and errors.** Pass meta.cursors.next back as cursor. Data API page tokens do not work here. Retry only when retryable is true. See [pagination](/docs/concepts/pagination) and [errors](/docs/concepts/envelope-and-errors).
6. **Check before switching.** Check success, empty, and not-found cases with a Test key. Then [move to Live](/docs/test-environment/test-to-live) and compare a small sample with the Data API.

## Verdicts

- **Choose Openhandle.** to search YouTube past the 100 calls a day, or to read transcripts of public videos that have captions.
- **Choose the YouTube Data API.** if you upload, edit, or manage your own channel, or read stats for known videos inside the free quota.
- **Use both.** Use the Data API for your own channel, and Openhandle for public reads past the quota.
