Reddit API alternative: approval and limits compared
A Reddit API alternative for public posts, comments, and subreddits. The official API needs Reddit’s approval before any access, and commercial use needs a contract. Openhandle needs one API key. Start with 100 free requests, no card.

$2.50 per 1,000 requests. Add balance from $10. Your first 100 requests are free.
How the Reddit API works now
- —Approval first. Reddit’s Responsible Builder Policy requires approval before you read Reddit data through the API. Request access and wait for approval.
- —Free quota. 100 queries per minute per OAuth client ID. Reddit averages it over 10 minutes, so short bursts are fine. Calls without OAuth are blocked.
- —Commercial use. If Reddit data powers a product you sell, you need Reddit’s permission and a contract. Reddit may charge fees to lift limits. It does not publish a price.
For the short answer on cost, see Is the Reddit API free? If you already use PRAW and hit the quota, see why PRAW returns 429. For what is free and what is paid, see Reddit API pricing.
Why people look for an alternative
- —Waiting for approval. You cannot send a real request until Reddit says yes. A side project or a quick test has to wait too.
- —A per-minute quota. 100 queries per minute is fine for one bot. It is slow when you watch hundreds of subreddits.
- —An unknown price. A product with paying users needs a contract, and you only learn the price after you ask.
- —One platform. The Reddit API only covers Reddit. If you also need Instagram, TikTok, or X, you add more APIs and more parsers.
Where the Reddit API may fit
- —Posting and voting. Post, comment, vote, and send messages. Openhandle is read-only and never writes to Reddit.
- —Moderation. Mod actions and modmail need a logged-in moderator.
- —Private communities. Reading a private subreddit you belong to needs your own login.
- —Small approved projects. If Reddit approved you and your use fits the free quota, the official API costs nothing.
You can use both. Use the Reddit API for actions that require a login, and Openhandle for public reads.
What changes when you move
- —No application. Create a key and call. Seconds. No approval wait.
- —Limits per second. 10 per second per key. Higher on request. There is no per-minute quota.
- —One price per request. $0.0025 per request, down to $0.002 at volume. 30-day cache hits are free. The price is on the pricing page.
- —Failed requests are free. You pay only when Openhandle returns an answer.
- —One shape. Profiles, posts, and comments look the same on Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, and X.
- —Public data only. Private, quarantined, and banned subreddits return PROFILE_PRIVATE.
Move your integration
- 01Start with a Test key. Create a Test key in the dashboard. Use the synthetic identifiers in the quickstart to check your integration without charges.
- 02Map your calls. Match each Reddit API call to the API reference. Check endpoints, parameters, and returned fields before you switch. Keep posting, voting, and moderation on the Reddit API. The table below lists common calls.
- 03Update paths, parameters, and authentication. Use https://api.openhandle.dev/v1 with Authorization: Bearer followed by your key. There is no OAuth flow.Profile usernames need an @ prefix in REST paths. Subreddit names go in without r/.
- 04Map response fields. Successful responses contain platform, resource, capturedAt, source, and data. Comments come back as nested replies arrays. Map fields using the response schemas. Keep unavailable metrics as null.
- 05Handle pagination and errors. Pass meta.cursors.next back as cursor for list requests. Reddit after values do not work here. Handle Openhandle error codes and retry only when retryable is true. See pagination and errors.
- 06Set a cap. Pick a monthly spending cap before you go live. We stop before it, so a bad loop cannot run up a bill.
- 07Check before switching. Check success, empty, private, and not-found cases with a Test key. Then move to Live and compare a small sample with the Reddit API before you switch production traffic.
